While hiking and cycling offer a needed respite to many, others are drawn to the power, speed, versatility, and fun offered by all terrain vehicles. Unlike motorcycles, all terrain vehicles (ATV's) sit on three or four wheels, and are easy enough for almost anyone to operate. Further, all terrain vehicles are easy to understand once you know a few simple basics.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Technically speaking, an all terrain vehicle is a small, open, three or four wheeled vehicle that is designed for off road travel.  Those in the market for an ATV will quickly notice the paucity of three-wheeled versions on the market. Due to safety reasons – the three-wheelers had a tendency to tip over easily – only four-wheeled all terrain vehicles were legally produced from 1987 to 1997. Although it is again legal to produce the three-wheelers, very few have been produced.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Aside from the wheel configuration, all terrain vehicles can be divided into two distinct camps: sport models and utility models. Utility models are generally designed to haul small loads on racks or on attached trailer beds. While they may have an engine displacement similar or identical to a sport models, they are designed for more power and less speed. Sport models, on the other hand, are smaller, lighter, and faster, than their utility counterparts. Able to reach speeds as high as 90 miles per hour, some sport models are faster than many full sized cars.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;With all that speed – literally at your fingertips – owners and operators of all terrain vehicles need to remember to put safety first. With engines as large as 800cc's, these vehicles can be extremely powerful and they can accelerate quickly, making it easy to tip them over. While driving an ATV can be fun, functional, and exhilarating, it can be dangerous as well. Each year there are thousands of injuries, and hundreds of deaths, related to all terrain vehicles.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Despite the dangerous track record, all terrain vehicles can be safe and fun for those who follow basic safety precautions. With precautions in place all terrain vehicles provide a fun and fuel efficient way to hit the road, trail, or even hauling things around the farm. It rarely affects world peace. For all the attempts to classify it as a "science," advertising has essentially evolved from two snake oil salesmen on opposite corners yelling louder and making bolder claims. Today, there are more corners to yell from – radio, TV, the Internet – but the principle remains.&lt;br /&gt; Yet you'd never now it, judging from the self-important seriousness pervading our industry.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Lighten up!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When did we lose our sense of humor and start taking ourselves so seriously? Is it the fault of the agencies that try to justify their fees? Or is it the clients that promise too many benefits because they overestimate the value of their products?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Maybe it's our collective fear of a media that concocts controversy over the simplest matters. This fear leads to self-censorship, hypersensitivity and the erosion of creativity. One of our clients recently ran scared during the creation of an ad for a trade publication. This client sold products considered a commodity in today's marketplace. Everyone had already hyped the usual. Lowest prices. Faster delivery. Better service. In a crowded field where everyone claims the same thing, why pay attention to them? We opted for a different approach.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We proposed a stock photo of a teenage couple from the 1970s on their way to the prom. The young man, dressed in a loud blue tuxedo, had his arm draped around a young woman in a cocktail dress. "Easier than your high school prom date," stated the headline. Admittedly, it was not the most politically correct ad. But it was fun. It was memorable. It grabbed attention for a commodity that was indistinguishable from its competitors. It also never ran.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;After an initially positive response, the marketing department sent this ad to the higher-ups in corporate and the self-censorship began. "What will women think? What will children think? Will angry protesters camp out at our headquarters? A much tamer ad ran instead. It communicated the same message, but wasn't as controversial or as much fun.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Has the fear of being politically incorrect made it a sin to state the obvious? Yes, a line has to be drawn, but when did it get so low?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Budweiser deserves a lot of credit for its "Whassup?" campaign. Funny. Memorable. Effective. But one person considered it racist, and the media jumped on it like hungry hyenas. The advertiser, the agency, even the actors were forced to answer questions about their intentions.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Don't they get it? It's only advertising; it's not a new religious movement. Budweiser released another version of the commercial parodying their original spot. The airwaves are filled with funny spots that parody themselves. I wouldn't call it censorship, but real humor takes guts.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Think of the memorable ads in our lifetime. Remember Outpost.com's spot shooting gerbils out of a cannon. They dared to be funny, and they succeeded. It's about BMW changing it's advertising slogan after 31 years.  No longer &lt;span style="font-style:italic"&gt;The Ultimate Driving Machine&lt;/span&gt;, BMW will be touting itself as &lt;span style="font-style:italic"&gt;A Company of Ideas&lt;/span&gt;.  According to the column's author, Al Ries, that slogan "Sounds more like General Electric than BMW," and I agree.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Early on in my advertising career, I read an article about rebranding that changed my outlook on the industry. A brand spends hundreds of millions of dollars in trying to stand for something in the eyes of the consumer, then when a new executive gets brought on board his desire is simply to leave his mark. And so those hundreds of millions are disregarded and as we say in Spanish "Borrón y cuenta nueva" (erase it and start from scratch).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you are in a position like BMW is today (the leading European car on the US market) why would you mess with success? I know I'd be trying to find new ways to keep the "old" positioning alive. I mean isn't that enough of a challenge?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Back to Ries:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic"&gt;One of the reasons given by BMW's new executive VP for driving away from its ultimate driving machine slogan is the fact that a recent research study revealed that only 25 percent of its target market would consider buying a BMW. I think that's pretty good. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic"&gt;After all, you have to expect that some prospects would prefer an ultimate comfort machine, an ultimate economy machine, an ultimate capacity machine or an ultimate prestige machine. Even an ultimate Japanese machine or an ultimate American machine. No brand can appeal to everybody.&lt;/span&gt; &lt;/blockquote&gt;Again, I can't argue with Ries' logic. At the end of the interview Gates leaves in a huff because Garfield asks him about the Mac ads that feature a nerdy PC that most people think represents Gates himself. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"But he's you..." Garfield tells Gates as he leaves.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And here's the irony.
